Much of our activity in 2011 is devoted to study Short-Range Correlations (SRC) in nuclei at the repulsive core ( E07-006 ) and its related experiments. Since January 2010 our group started to conduct testing of the detectors. One upgrade is that two additional planes of scintillators have been added to the Hall A Neutron Detector (HAND). This coupling with a thinner lead wall will increase the HAND efficiency from 17% to 30%. Calibration of the HAND and the hadron package to detect the proton are ongoing and will be completed in fall 2010. Installation of the detectors will begin in January 2011. The experiment will begin to take data in the early March and finish in April 2011. Within one or two years, the data analysis will be completed. We also have plans to study the possible connection between SRC and EMC effect (European Muon Collaboration). |

The analysis of the data related to the study of the dynamic structure of the nucleon - measuring 3-dimentional relationships between the locations, momenta, angular momenta, and spins of quarks in nucleons (Transversity E06-010) - in Hall A is near completion. The results are being finalized and are being presented already in conferences, including by our student Jin Huang. Most of the remaining time in year 2010 will be devoted to the writing of the dissertation. Production of a preliminary draft manuscript has been already initiated and will be completed soon. After upgrade, an updated 12GeV (Transversity II E12-10-006) experiment, which studies the similar physics as the original one, but with much higher coverage and precision, has been proposed and fully approved. |

An update to PR12-09-014: Target Single Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Electro Pion Production on a Trasversely Polarized 3He Target at 8.8 and 11 GeV |

The data analysis of the 6GeV Parity Violation Deep Inelastic Scattering (E08-011 PVDIS) has just begun. The Compton Polarimeter data and the system deadtime have been analyzed. Some simulation work regarding to the trigger rate is proceeding. We expect very preliminary results to be presented at conferences within one year, and the completion of the analysis leading to thesis and journal publications in about 2 years. In addtion, there is a conditionally approved 12GeV-update PVDIS ( E12-07-102 ) at Hall C, where the spokesperson is Xiaochao Zheng, a UVa professor, who was the former graduate student in our group and who was also the spokesperson of 6GeV PVDIS. The 12GeV-update PVDIS will obtain the neutral current coupling constants with much higher precision so that some new physics beyond the Standard Model might be explored. |

Dark
Matter makes the majority of mass of the universe, yet it is not seen.
One of the very new paradigms related to dark matter is that it
interacts through a “dark force” that is carried by a newly postulated
particle, X. In collaboration with Professors Milner and Fisher from
LNS, we are involved in the development of a research proposal to search
for the X boson. The experimental program that is being developed will
modify the Free-Electron Laser at JLab, currently the most intense light
source of its kind in the world, to make it ideally suited to our
search.
